This is William Harmon, who along with his twin brother Luke, was diagnosed with autism at a young age. I am currently working on a story about the boys. Their mother, Alicia, has been very helpful and open in the entire process, which I greatly appreciate. I hope that with this story, I can show people even a small snippet of the boy’s lives. No completion date yet, right now I’m simply enjoying the chance I’m getting to spend with these two great kids.

Cactus Volunteer Firefighter Elias Jaquez

I had the priviledge of covering the funeral services for Cactus volunteer firefighter Elias Jaquez in Dumas, Texas this week. Jaquez died April 20th from injuries he suffered while fighting a wildfire on April 9th in Moore County. Hundreds of people attended the services. A funeral procession was led by nearly 100 fire serives vehicles that came to be part of the honor gaurd, some units which traveled from as far away as California.

The Ride-Along

I can remember being a college student and always hearing fellow photographers talking about doing a ride-along assignment. I never really attempted to do in while in school, but I can admit that I was always a little intrigued. I have done 3 ride alongs since I have been here in Amarillo. The first was with an APD officer, the second was with a Game Warden, and the most recent was with Potter County's Precinct 2 Constable Morice Jackson. They have all been completely different, some more exciting then others. I think I learned that you basically have to shoot everything you can while on the trip, because you may not see anything super exciting, but at least you will come back with something.

My awesome family decided to take a last minute trip to come visit me on my birthday last week. Overall it was great to see them all even if it was just for a day and a half. There are pretty much no photos of any of us after we all got old enough to protest being dressed alike for family portraits, so now that were all mature, I thought it would be a great opportunity for a photo.

Lighting

Artificial lighting has never been my greatest strength, which is a hard thing for me to admit to as a photographer. The knowledge I do have with lighting has all come from random jobs and usually setting things up for other people, which helps, but doesn't always give you answers to a lot of questions. One of my main goals since I've been in Amarillo is to get better with lighting, and thanks to "The Hot Shoe Diaries" by Joe McNally, Googling countless portraits and the help from fellow photogs, I think I'm beginning to take steps in the right direction.

Attending a hot air balloon festival was definately on my list of things I've wanted to do. Luckily, I was able to cover the final day of the Pirates of the Canyon Balloon Festival in Palo Duro Canyon State Park a few days ago. Hundreds of people started to gather before sun rise for their chance to see the mass balloon ascension, unfortunately, high winds forced the balloons to stay grounded. Overall it was still a great experience, and I even got to float in one for a brief moment.

The Rivalry

So as you might know, high school football tends to be a big deal in Texas. This week I got to experience probably one of the biggest rivalries in the Panhandle, and surely the biggest rivalry in Amarillo between Amarillo High School and Tascosa High School. Neadless to say, Dick Bivins Stadium was filled to near capacity by students, parents and alumni. Amarillo High was able to knock off Tascosa in a 17-3 win.

Staff Sgt. Esau Gonzales' Funeral

Army Staff Sgt. Esau Gonzales' mother, Sandra Lanier, from left, his father Atanacio Gonzales, and his widow, Melissa Gonzales, hold the flags that were presented to them during Esau's funeral services Wednesday at the Panhandle Cemetery. Esau was killed May 3, 2010 in Iraq after suffering a non-combat-related chest wound.

Army Staff Sgt. Esau Gonzales, a native of the city of Panhandle, Tx (about 30 minutes east of Amarillo) died in what the Army is describing as a non-combat related incident in early May 2010. I was assigned to cover his memorial service, his funeral and later sat in on an interview with his mother. This was the first funeral that I have had to document, and I was a little nervous from the start. I wasnt really nervous about being able to come out with a decent photo, I was more nervous about being in the way. I took my bosses advice and simply tried to stay out of the way.

We ran a photo from the memorial service and some of our online readers commented on how we (the media) should leave people alone in moments of grief. I understood where the comments were coming from, but also knew that we had permission to be there, and were also there to report on something that I consider important. A few days after the funeral, the local war memorial held a Memorial Day service, and the mother and father of Sgt. Gonzales both thanked me for the coverage of their sons funeral services. His mother, Sandra, even went out of her way to tell me how professional of a job I had done, and even gave me a hug after it was all said and done. I was very rewarding to know that the people who were most affected by these events were not bothered by our presence in their time of grief. I have recieved plenty of thank yous from people over the years, but this one still feels more important then the rest.

Shark Fights 9

I had the privilege of covering an MMA event put on by an Amarillo based fight promotion company. It is the first fighting event I have ever covered, and it definitely made me want to cover the next one. I got a phone call a little over a week ago that changed alot of things in my life. The main being where I work and live. I am now working as a staff photographer for the Amarillo Globe-News in Amarillo, Tx. Some of my previous posting came from the internship I had here nearly two years ago.

I was very close to giving up on the idea of being a staff photojournalist, but luckily it all came together.

I have alot of things to figure out still, like where I will be living. Do to the large amount of snow, I decided to stay indoors today and wait until tomorrow to continue the apartment search.

My foot is burried somewhere in there.

Im thinking a small SUV may be a good idea.

My brother, Rafael, graduated from the University of Texas at Arlington with a Bachelors degree in biology this week. This is only step one, as he now has to apply to dental school. I am extremely proud of him.

I shot a track meet for the Denton Record Chronicle last night. It was a last minute assignment, so I arrived after it had begun, and had to get a hang of it fairly quickly. The thing I had the most trouble with was keeping track of what race was actually going on, be it a junior varsity or varsity race. It was even harder because I couldn't hear the announcer and there was alot of people on the field. I managed to get the photos that I needed, but I felt likeI could do much better. It was definately a great learning experience, and I hope I can apply what I learned to next time.

This post is a little late; I just havent had time to update much. This is the playoff high school girls soccer game I shot for the Denton Record Chronicle earlier in the week.

I have shot a lot of sports for the DRC, but I take it as a good thing because even though I have shot a lot of sports, I still think I needed to improve my skills. Especially when it comes to shooting with a much longer lens. These were all shot with a 300.

Change of Plans

While I was planning on shooting a long term peace for a class, I have been given the opportunity to shoot for the Denton Record Chronicle as a regular stringer. While a freelancer has assignments on a rare basis, and is not really involved with the newsroom, my role at the DRC will be a little bit different. It's almost like a part-time internship. Well I hope that is what it will turn into. Since I will be receiving credit for the class, I will be required to shoot more things then a regular freelancer. I will work for them the rest of the semester, which is about 10 weeks.

I started Wednesday and so far I have shot softball, and will be shooting a college basketball game tonight.

I am very excited about the opportunity, as I think it will grant me even more professional experience and will surely expand my resume and skills.

Gary Payne, who is a staff photographer at the DRC, took a lot of the initiative to try and make this work out, and I greatly appreciate it.

I still hope to be able to work on a long term peace, as I think it is something that I need to have under my skills. This project will have to be something else that I can fit into my already hectic schedule, but hopefully I can do it as well.

While the following photos has nothing to do with what I planned to accomplish today, but I figured I would post them simply because this is a photo blog. And I did take one of them today.

The goal for today was to visit the Salvation Army shelter here in Denton. As it turns out, I just missed the director by a few minutes, and was unable to talk to her. While technically nothing was finalized today, it felt good to really act on an idea and at least try to pursue it. The idea being that I can photograph someone who has been affected by the recent economic downturn and hopefully turn it into a long term photo story. I think this is something I have to be patient with, and will continue to pursue it.

Free Day

The weather in North Texas has been a little cold and icy the last few days, and therefor school has been closed which means I had a few free days. Fellow photographer Justin and I opted to try some lighting on one of these free days. Due to a lack of models, and the money to hire them, we had to take photos of ourselves. Needless to say, we both don't enjoy being photographed, but we cooperated. I have little experience with strobes and therefore my final item was not completely great. Here is the best one I produced on this make-shift shoot.

School is back in session, and I really want to start shooting alot more. I went nearly the entire break without shooting anything. Riding Unlimited

As the final project for my multimedia class, fellow class mates Carter Rose, Whitney Buster and Holly Dutton and I decided to do a story on Riding Unlimited, an equestrian therapy center in Ponder, Tx. The final piece included a video, photo, map and text portion.

Overall the entire project took us an entire month to shoot and edit. We all spent countless hours in labs and at Riding Unlimited working.

Overall I am very pleased with the way the project come out.

This is a photo story I shot for my portfolio class this semester. I had always wanted to not only experience a drag-strip, but also photograph it. Going into the project, I decided that I wanted to concentrate more on the people then the cars. I did include a photo of cars simply for the purpose of successfully establishing the idea of a drag-strip, but overall I wanted to tell more about the people who participate. I am about 85% satisfied with the overall project. I simply wish I could have spent more time with these people, and really got some intimate moments. Maybe Ill go back again once its racing weather.

I Found This Interesting

This photo was taken by Vincent Laforet for NEWSWEEK, and the photo originally ran on a blog with daily photo coverage of the Olympics on August 23, 2008.

The following photo was taken by Andrew Burton, a student at the Syracuse University. He received the first place award for the sports action category in the 63rd CPOY Competition.

I am in no way saying that either photographer plagiarized the image, I was simply intrigued by how very similar these two photos are, and how they have technically become "famous" photos since one is on the Newsweek website, and the other is on the 63rd CPOY website. The photos have small differences, including a different tone of "white", the diver is in a slightly different position, and the crop is different.

I was more intrigued by the fact that two different photographers saw something interesting, and decided that it was something photo worthy. With a high number of photographers covering events, especially the Olympics, it is not surprising that images such as these happen.

After 13 weeks, and six thousand miles, I am back in Denton.
My internship in Amarillo could not have gone any better. I had the opportunity to work with great people at the Globe-News, and felt like I really had the opportunity to shoot a wide variety of assignments, and not just your typical intern stuff.
I probably visited every single town in west texas, including those whose population did not even reach the 200 mark.
Now its time to set down and sort through the thousands of images I shot during the summer, and try to improve my portfolio.

Cal Farley's Boys Ranch

Cal Farley's Boys Ranch held their last practice before their 64th Annual Rodeo that will take place Labor Day weekend. The rodeo will include categories like junior bull riding, steer riding, jr calf riding, along with others. Over 90 Cal Farley youths and teens from Girlstown, U.S.A. will participate in the rodeo.

Land owner Lance Williams and National Resources Conservation Service District Conservationist John Wimberley, discuss the condition of a 320 acre plot of land located at the intersection of Hwy 207 and Co. Rd. 9, which is under a Conservation Resource Program contract until 2012. Williams said he plans to produce either corn or cotton on the land once the contract expires.

Golden Spread Cowboy Church

The Golden Spread Cowboy Church meets Wednesday night and Sunday afternoons at the Rolling Hills Riding Club right outside the Amarillo city limits. The church was established with the main intention to invite those who stray away from the formal, traditional church experience, and desire a more casual environment. The church has been open for nearly a year, and is under the care of Pastor Kevin Burris. The July 30th service was followed by practice for the weekend's rodeo event.

The original assignment was to simply shoot a piece for our "Congregational Corner" series, which simply includes a photo of the pastor, the building, and any other occurence during the service. Before arriving, I had always wanted to photograph a cowboy church, so I took advantage of the situation and shot more then I needed to cover the assignment.

Dale Bippus

I recently had to photograph a portrait of Dale Bippus for the newspaper's "Profiles of Success" series. Mr. Bippus is a retired chemical engineer who worked for the U.S. Bearuea of Mines for 40 years. Now that he is retired, he spends alot of time dabbling in different things like wood work, fixing cars, and hes favorite: fishing. Mr. Bippus is a prime example of the great people that being a journalist will allow you to meet.

The Boulevard

A few days ago, I was given the task to photograph teenagers hanging out on Amarillo Blvd, also known as "the Boulevard." The street itself is simply a few mile strip of small restaurants, bars, and clubs, and doesnt have a great reputation. My boss figured I would have better luck communicating with people because of the language barrier . These are some of the photos of the frist attempts to complete this project.

Archaeology

The Texas Archaeological Society held a field school in Perryton, Tx a few days ago. A total of 19 sites were being excavated, of which each site contained several different areas. Many findings included pieces of pottery, animal bones and tools such as knives. The group opted to return to the same site next year to continue their search for artifacts.

Authentic Texas

Amarillo hosted the Coors Chuckwagon World Championship this past weekend. Participants in the event set up their chuckwagons with the idea of being as authentic to the late 1800's period as possible. They are judged on overall authenticity, and are also judged in period cooking.

Graduation

While photographing the Canyon High School graduation ceremony, I walked towards the front and began taking photos. Out of my right ear I heard someone say "Thats my son". This person turned out the be the mother of Robert Brandon Hauschild. Brandon was accompanied by his older brother Jeff who had flown in from Dallas to be able to aid his brother in crossing the stage. His mother did not say much to me, but in the few words she said, she told me alot. She said, "Hes been in the special-ed program ever since he went to Canyon. I couldn't be more proud."

So it begins...

I have only been in Amarillo for two days, and I have already worked a 12 hours day, but this long of a day is most likely to be rare. I was actually held at gun point on my first assignment, luckily I could have only been shot with refreshing water. We also went on a wild goose chase for a possible dead body, and followed that with a motorcycle crash, and finished off the day with a Amarillo Dillas baseball game. Overall, it was a great first day.

La Hacienda Los Robles

La Hacienda Los Robles is a 125 acre ranch located on the outskirts of Fort Worth, Texas. The ranch is currently run by Walter Cardenas, who has been working at the ranch for 18 years, and has a total of 40 years experience working with horses. While Cardenas manages every aspect ranging from the horses training to their health, he is specialed as a horse farrier. While Cardenas also dabbles in welding and building construction, he siad he can only be away from his horses for a short time before he feels out of place. Through out the years, Cardenas and his horses have won countless awards, which all lines the walls of one of his barns.

Eric McGehearty

At the age of 5, Eric McGehearty was diagnosed with dyslexia. After recieving the appropriate aid, and help from his parents, McGehearty was able to work around his learning disability and earned his master's degree in fine arts sculpture from UNT in 2004. Some of McGehearty's early work dealt with the general idea of frustrations but changed when a professor asked him to create a piece directly related to his dyslexia. Eric's work has evolved from ideas based on his dyslexia to the broader ideas like a body of text and the information they contain.

Backlight

The idea of lighting someone or something from behind usually resulted in bad photos. An assignment this week required us to backlight everything, and make the proper adjustments with a fill card. Backlight doesn't seem so bad anymore.

Presidential candidate Ron Paul made a campaign stop at the Univeristy of North Texas in Denton. Steve Logan

Steve Logan, owner of Steve's BBQ, hopes to be able to re-open his business at a new location on Locust St. in Denton, Texas. Steve's BBQ stood at its former location for 23 years, until it burned down four years ago on Easter Sunday. Logan has already invested $8000 dollars into the new location, but has much more work to do. Logan has been out of work since he lost his business due to numerous medical problems, and says he is anxious to get back to doing what he loves.

Campus Barber Shop

The Campus Barber Shop located at 116 Fry St. in Denton, is essentially on the edge of what still stands of the original buildings that made up this local business and hang out area. The barber shop has been owned and managed by Gene Hartman for the past 48 years.

GULUWALK

The GULUWALK is a campaing by Athletes for Africa in support of orphaned, and soldier children in Uganda. The event was created only 3 years ago, and is already held in over 100 cities in 15 different countries. Dallas held the event for the first time this year on October 20, 2007.

I had heard of the College Photographer of the Year competition before, but I had never really entered anything. This year i figured I'd do it jsut for fun. This is my entry for the portrait category.

Rafael Rodriguez sits inside the factory office during his lunch break in oder to escape the 32 degree temperature at which the rest of the milk factory is maintianed. Rodriguez has held the job of "Checker" at the Borden Milk Products Dallas plant for 28 years.

Even though I've been doing photography for a while now, I had mainly concentrated on more of the arts side. As of a month ago, I started to shoot for my campus newspaper. Its not huge, but its definetaly a start.

The Omega Psi Phi Fraternity and the NT Trailblazers organized a march to commemorate the desegregation of UNT 51 years ago. Marchers filed in front of St Andrew Church of God in Christ Saturday Septemeber 8, 2007, in honor of UNT's first African-American students.

Overgrown grass climbs up the construction fence surrounding this old Quakertown home located on 317 W. Mulberry St. Once fully restored, the home will be turned into the Denton County African American Musuem.
